Feels good to make a difference

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 28): The colourful new sports court at PPR Seri Cempaka, Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur has brought smiles to the faces of not only the residents but also the Sayangi Rumahku volunteers who helped transform the once forlorn court.

“It s very heartwarming to know that we can make a difference,” those were the words echoed among the volunteers from the respective organisers and supporters of the Sayangi Rumahku campaign to refurbish the sports courts of public housing schemes.

The campaign is a joint effort by EdgeProp.my, Paramount Property Development Sdn Bhd and Nippon Paint Malaysia Sdn Bhd in support of the National Community Policy or Dasar Komuniti Negara (DKN) formulated by the Housing and Local Government Ministry. The DKN is aimed at improving the lives of the B40 group.

“Many PPR residents want to refurbish their sport courts and improve their dwelling space, but they don’t have the means. I am glad we can help out through this campaign,” Paramount Property Development marketing and branding manager Yvonne Khoo told EdgeProp.my.

She said Paramount received overwhelming response from its employees who are eager to help out with the campaign.

“We believe that colours can lift the atmosphere and cheer up a place. Looking at the repainted court, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I am glad we are able to make a difference.”

Nippon Paint Malaysia manager (marketing) Lim Chi Yaw shared her sentiments.

“Colours go beyond aesthetics. They bring joy and thus have a positive impact on mental health.

“Working with the other volunteers here taught us teamwork. To be united, regardless of race and social status,” he said.

Volunteers also welcome the change of scenery from their corporate offices and to be able to contribute back to the community.

Paramount Property integrated management system manager Shaun Tan said: “This is my second time participating in this campaign and it is really eye-opening. It’s heart-warming to know we are improving the lives of the people living here. Plus, I got to learn how to use a paint brush properly too!”

“This project, it’s not just about money. We have invested our emotions into this as well. It’s out of love for the community.

“There’s a saying; we can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone,” offered Ian Leong who is the senior account manager of EdgeProp.my.

“I am happy, not just because of the vibrant colours, but to be able to contribute to the community,” said Nippon Paint Malaysia’s HR executive Nadia Hamdan.

(Pro-tip) Nadia said one has to dab the paint brush or roller slightly during painting, especially on uneven surfaces to ensure an even coating.

Unpredictable weather did not dampen the spirits of the volunteers as well.

“It may be hot and humid, but it’s worth it when I see the smiles on the children’s faces as they play on the brand new court.

“When it comes to charity, it is not just about donating money. We helped give our time to uplift and upgrade the sports court, a space that means a lot to the residents,” said EdgeProp.my marketing and communications manager Sabrina Foo.

One thing we can all take home: No matter what our contribution may be — if we could make just one person’s day better, then we have made a difference.
